QAD | Quranic Arabic Daily

How is the Quran divided?

1. The Quran is divided into 114 Chapters called Surahs.

  • The first Surah is called Fatiha (The Opening) and the final Surah is called Nas (Mankind).
  • The shortest Surah is Surah al Kawther (108) and the longest Surah is Surah Baqarah.
  • The other shortest Surahs are Al Asr (103) and An Nasr chapter 110.
  • The Surahs are known as Medina or Mecca Surahs due to the place where they were revealed.

2. A Juz, also known as Siparah in Urdu, is another part of the Quran.

  • There are 30 Juz in the Quran. This division is used for readers of the Quran to be able to complete a reading of the Quran in a certain period of time, like during Ramadhan or over 30 weeks. So a Juz can be completed in one day or in one week. There is also a division based on finishing the Quran in 7 days called Manzil.
  • It is recommended that a reading of the Quran should be done at least once in every year.

3. A Hizb is a part of the Quran which is half the length of a Juz. Each Hizb is made up of four quarters, known as Rubu3.

  • There are 60 Hizb in the Quran.

4. An Ayat is a verse or sign of the Quran. There are some 6348 verses in the Quran (including Bismillah at the beginning of each Surah). It has been recommended for one who wishes to Hafiz (memorise) the Quran that they should memorise 5 Ayats at a time. This would take just under 4 years to complete the memorisation of Quran.

  • The longest verse in the Quran is found in Surah Baqarah verse 282, which is a whole page long.
  • The shortest verse in the Quran in terms of words is found in Surah Rahman 55:64 which is one word.
  • The shortest verse in the Quran in terms of letters are found at the beginning of Surahs Ta Ha (20), Yaseen (36), and Ha Meem, they comprise of only two letters.

You can use any of these divisions not only to read the Quran but also to memorise the Quran. Depending on your age, schedule and how organised you are, memorisation of the Quran can take anything from 3 to 10 years.

Quranic Arabic is also known as Classical Arabic or Fusha (most eloquent).

It is used for speaking, speeches, films, plays, cartoons, prayers, supplications, contracts and transactions, history books, books of law etc.

The importance of this form of Arabic is very influential to Muslims as it is this Arabic that Muslims use for reading the Quran and praying, saying duas, reading/quoting hadeeth, and reading history.

There are several ways to learn to read/recite the Quran. Some people prefer one method whilst others use a variety of ways to learn. Some people learn via transliteration, some listen to audios, repeat and memorise what they hear. Other people use books that gradually take you through the various rules of reading Quran and there are other ways too.

People want to learn the Quran for many different reasons. It could be because of the blessings of just reading the Quran or because of the feeling of being able to complete the Quran over and over again in the original Arabic language or the feeling you get from understanding the verses in a different way to in the English. Whatever the reason for wanting to learn the Quran one thing is for sure is that the Quran is the word of Allah and reading the Quran is a conversation with Allah.

If you would like to learn how to read the Quran, for whatever reason, there is no time like the present. Quranic Arabic Lessons now available for the early birds.

Some reasons to learn Arabic

Arabic is the fourth/fifth most spoken language in the world. There are many countries that speak Arabic as a first language. One of the first things that a person does when he or she becomes a Muslim is to learn some basic Arabic words and chapters of the Quran. Arabic is also the language of many Christians in the Middle East who are very proud of their language.

Why would anyone learn Arabic?

  1. It is a scientific language.
  2. It is a spiritual language.
  3. It is one of the top languages to learn in political and economic circles.
  4. Its letters are clear, unlike many other languages where various letters can have different sounds and pronunciations.
  5. It is a language whose learners increase every time someone becomes Muslim…and we all know how many people are becoming Muslims, despite the negative media stereotypes and shocking stories.
  6. It is a language not just of Arabs or for Arabs, as the Arabic language has been made international…it is now open for anyone to learn.
  7. There are obviously many jobs a person can get if they can speak Arabic such as within Journalism, travel companies, NGO’s, charitable organisations and aid agencies, translation and interpretation, teaching, spy agencies and secret services, financial institutes working and meeting with those rich Arabs etc etc etc.
  8. For social reasons…maybe you have a Muslim friend or know someone who is Arab or speaks Arabic.
  9. It is a language that has been around for some 2000 years. It has classical, modern and colloquial versions of it.
  10. And last but not least it is the language of one of the most popular and widely read books ever. The language of a book that is controversial but attracts so many people of all backgrounds and cultures. It is the language of the Holy Quran.

There are many Arabic words used in other languages like English, you may even speak words of Arabic origin without even realising.

The word Maula in the Quran

The Word Maula in the Quran

  • Allah is your Maula (Master, Patron, Lord, Helper, Protector), and He is the Best of helpers. (  سورة آل عمران  , Aal-e-Imran, Chapter #3, Verse #150)

  • Then they are returned to Allah, their True Maula [True Master (God), the Just Lord (to reward them)]. Surely, for Him is the judgement and He is the Swiftest in taking account. (  سورة الأنعام  , Al-Anaam, Chapter #6, Verse #62)

  • Say: “Nothing shall ever happen to us except what Allah has ordained for us. He is our Maula (Lord, Helper and Protector).” And in Allah let the believers put their trust. (  سورة التوبة  , At-Taubah, Chapter #9, Verse #51)

  • There! Every person will know (exactly) what he had earned before and they will be brought back to Allah, their rightful Maula (Lord), and their invented false deities will vanish from them. (  سورة يونس  , Yunus, Chapter #10, Verse #30)

  • So this Day no ransom shall be taken from you (hypocrites), nor of those who disbelieved, (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism). Your abode is the Fire. That is your Maula (friend – proper place), and worst indeed is that destination. (  سورة الحديد  , Al-Hadid, Chapter #57, Verse #15)

They have certainly disbelieved who say, ” God is the Messiah, the son of Mary” while the Messiah has said, “O Children of Israel, worship God , my Lord and your Lord.” Indeed, he who associates others with Allah – Allah has forbidden him Paradise, and his refuge is the Fire. And there are not for the wrongdoers any helpers.
